I’ve Called Cattle Auctions in Fort Worth for 30 Years. Last Spring I Caught a Bidder Cheating, and When I Saw Who It Was, I Wished I’d Never Looked Up

Royce was sitting at their kitchen table with his head in his hands.

Dee stood behind him with her arms crossed. She’d been crying.

“Tell him,” she said.

Royce didn’t look up.

“I’m in debt,” he said. “Two hundred and ten thousand dollars. Bad investments, a cattle deal in Kansas that fell apart, a loan against the house Dee didn’t know about. Frank Tolliver said he’d forgive it. All of it. If I helped him at the sales. Just for one season.”

“Frank Tolliver,” I said.

“I know.”

Frank Tolliver was the man across town. A wealthy dealer with friends in high places and a reputation that made other dealers lower their voices.

“How many sales?” I asked.

“Six,” Royce said. “Today was the sixth. I was done. I swear to God, Hollis, I was done.”

“Except you saw me looking at you,” I said.

He finally lifted his head.

“Except I saw you looking at me.”

Dee pulled out a chair and sat down hard.

“He told me tonight because he thought you’d report him,” she said. “He wanted me to hear it from him first.”

The kitchen was quiet except for the clock on the wall. The same clock that had hung in our mother’s kitchen. Dee had taken it when we cleaned out the house.

“Hollis,” she said. “What are you going to do?”

I looked at my sister. Fifty-one years old. Gray at the temples now. The same little girl who used to sit on the back step of our father’s house waiting for me to come home from school so she wouldn’t be alone with him.

I’d protected her my whole life.

“Dee,” I said. “What do you want me to do?”

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she said the bravest thing I’ve ever heard anyone say.

“I want you to do what you’d do if he was a stranger,” she said. “And I want you to let me stand next to you when you do it.”
