An Irish Woman and Her Three-Legged Dog Beat Me at My Own Sheepdog Trial. She Said She’d Be Back Next Year to Do It Again

She came out to the ranch the next morning.

And the next.

And the one after that.

Siobhan had grown up on a hill farm in Kerry, where her grandfather ran sheep on mountains so steep you needed a dog that could climb like a goat. She knew more about stockmanship than any man I’d met in ten years.

She also knew about loss. Her farm had been in her family for four generations. In the divorce, her husband’s lawyer had forced a sale. A developer from Cork bought it. She’d watched them bulldoze her grandmother’s stone barn from the road.

“I’m not here for a holiday,” she told me one evening, sitting on my porch steps while the dogs slept in a heap at our feet. “I’m here because I didn’t know where else to go.”

“What happens when the month is up?”

“I go home and start over,” she said. “Rent a little field. Train dogs for other people. Enter trials. See if anyone in Ireland still remembers how good Tess is.”

“And if they don’t?”

“Then I’ll make them.”

I believed her.

On the last weekend of her trip, there was a second trial, a bigger one, in Steamboat Springs. Prize money. Good dogs from five states.

She entered Tess.

I entered Ace.

On Saturday morning, at the handlers’ meeting, the head judge took me aside.

“Callan,” he said. “There’s been a complaint. Somebody says a three-legged dog shouldn’t be allowed to compete. Says it’s a safety and liability issue for the trial’s insurance. The committee’s voting in an hour.”

“Who complained?”

He told me.

It was a man I’d sold sheep to for twenty years. A man whose dog Tess had beaten in Meeker by six points.

I found Siobhan by the trailer, brushing Tess.

She already knew. I could see it on her face.

“It’s fine,” she said, not looking at me. “We’ll just watch.”
